ALGIERS - Algeria's spending on imports of cereals, semolina and flour in 2019 dropped by 11.7% from the previous year, official data showed on Thursday.
Algeria, one of the world's largest grain importers, has been trying to reduce its expenditure on imported cereals and other goods after a fall in energy earnings.
The value of imported durum wheat, soft wheat, semolina and flour reached $2.71 billion last year, down from $3.06 billion in 2018, according to customs figures.
There were no details on volumes in the data.
Overall spending on food imports fell by 6% to $8.07 billion in 2019, the data showed.
