ISTANBUL - Some 53,000 Syrian refugees who have been given Turkish citizenship are eligible to vote in local elections due next month, Interior Minister Suleyman Soylu said on Saturday.
 
"Only Syrians who have acquired Turkish citizenship have the right to vote in municipal elections," the minister clarified during a meeting to assess security measures ahead of the vote.
 
He revealed that ta total of 79,820 Syrians have obtained Turkish citizenship, 53,99 of whom will vote in the elections.
 
The Turkish government has granted citizenship to thousands of refugees who have fled the conflict in neighboring Syria.
 
Turkey is hosting around 3.5 million Syrian refugees. (end) ta.nam
