AMMAN — The government is planning to consider begging as a form of human trafficking as amendments to Anti-Human Trafficking Law No.9 of 2009 are waiting Parliament’s approval.
The draft stipulates that begging is a human trafficking crime, and the perpetrator shall face imprisonment for no less than seven years and a fine of no more than JD20,000.
According to the Ministry of Social Development’s figures for 2020, more than 12 individuals are involved in directing a total of 80 adults to practise organised begging activities, which falls under the “exploitation” provision in the Anti-Human Trafficking Law No.9 of 2009, the Jordan News Agency, Petra, reported on Monday.
