Bahrain reveals changes in self-sponsorship expat visas

Manama: Bahrain has halved the amount of BD100,000 required for expatriates to invest in the country to be eligible to obtain self-sponsorship status.

Foreigners holding a minimum BD50,000 stake in any financial, trade, industrial, tourism projects or any other business or investment schemes can apply for self-sponsorship residence visas.

Chaired by Deputy Premier Shaikh Mohammed bin Mubarak Al Khalifa, the weekly Cabinet session approved the streamlined measure, under a proposal by Interior Minister General Shaikh Rashid bin Abdulla Al Khalifa.

Entry visas and self-sponsorship residence permits will also be granted to retired expatriates who hail from countries whose citizens are eligible to apply for electronic online visas, said Cabinet secretary general Dr Yasser Al Nasser.

Bahrain has also waived entry fees for Thai tourists, in keeping with the principle of reciprocity between the two countries.

Ukraine and Serbia have also been added to the list of countries whose citizens are eligible for e-entry visas, bringing the overall number of states benefiting from the procedure to 121.

The Cabinet stressed the importance of the prestigious Jewellery Arabia exhibition, which opens today under the patronage of His Royal Highness Prime Minister Prince Khalifa bin Salman Al Khalifa, in promoting trade and bolstering Bahrain’s status as a world-standard hub for gold and jewellery industry. It hailed the Premier’s patronage which contributed to attracting major international firms and ensuring the success of the show since its inception 28 years ago.

Bahrain is gearing up to host the 2019 edition of the three-day IISS Manama Dialogue, which opens on Friday. Ministers stressed its importance as a platform to discuss security priorities to bolster regional and international co-operation.

The Cabinet approved the appropriation of properties in Ghuraifa to enable the Works, Municipalities Affairs and Urban Planning Ministry to expand roads there. It also endorsed the appropriation of properties for the Bahrain Authority for Culture and Antiquities to set up a textile factory in Bani Jamra.
