Abu Dhabi: - From October 3-7, the UAE will host the 85th General Assembly of the International Electrotechnical Commission in the emirate of Dubai. The event brings together international experts, scientists, technicians and specialists in industrial, commercial, academic, technical and engineering fields, as well as young people from 88 countries. Held this year under the theme “Leading the Fourth Industrial Revolution with Standardization”, the General Meeting provides a unique platform for exchanging ideas, information and best practices and for establishing new directions and strategies.

The current edition of the General Meeting is of particular importance as it is organized as a hybrid event for the first time, combining in-person and virtual attendance. Around 300 international officials, experts and specialists will be present in Dubai with thousands of attendees connecting via video from around the world.

The General Meeting, which is hosted by the Ministry of Industry and Advanced Technology, will be accompanied by the launch of its “Young Professionals Program”, which is dedicated to training the next generation of experts and leaders in the field of standardization and conformity assessment. These young professionals are essential pillars for developing the infrastructure of quality as well as popularizing the applications of the Fourth Industrial Revolution.

Hosting the General Meeting of the International Electrotechnical Organization reflects the UAE’s status as a regional economic and industrial hub, and is in line with the nation’s strategy for building a sustainable economy based on knowledge and innovation as outlined in the recent Projects of the 50.

The International Electrotechnical Commission is one of the oldest institutions concerned with the establishment of international standards for products and services in the field of electrical and electronic devices, equipment and their components. The UAE is proud to take its place as a full member of the organization alongside the most advanced countries in the industrial and technological fields.

High-Level Meetings

IEC is committed to the development of international specifications and standards, and the management of programs for mutual recognition of conformity certificates for all electrical and electronic devices and related technologies. Its members consist of 89 countries (national committees), 210 technical committees and more than 1,500 teams.

Each year, industry leaders, technology experts, regulators, academics and stakeholders come together in the IEC’s General Meeting, whose sessions and technical committees decide on current issues, future directions and strategies for a wide range of technologies.

Discussions focus on many topics related to future industries and advanced technology, such as power generation, transmission and distribution, household appliances, office and medical equipment, semiconductors, optical fibers, batteries, solar energy, nanotechnology, marine energy, medical and magnetic technologies, multimedia and communication, in addition to many other technologies related to measurement, performance, design, development, safety and environment. All discussions around these technologies are held in support of the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals.

The UAE’s participation in IEC will focus on exchanging experiences and enhancing the participation of young Emirati professionals and technicians in topics like artificial intelligence, the internet of things, increasing production capacity and developing standardized specifications.

Emirati professionals

The Young Professionals Program, which began in 2010, will be held on the sidelines of the General Meeting. The UAE, as it has done every year, will participate in this year’s sessions through four national participants, including Engineer Mohammed Hassan from the Federal Authority for Nuclear Regulation (FANR), Engineer Lubna Al-Maaini from the Dubai Electricity and Water Authority (DEWA), Engineer Alia Al Zaabi from the Abu Dhabi National Oil Company (ADNOC), and Engineer Reem Al Falasi from the Emirates Integrated Telecommunications Company (du). The participants’ interests are concentrated in the areas of security, services, nuclear energy, oil and gas, renewable energy, industry and telecommunications.

By hosting the Young Professionals Program in parallel with the General Meeting, the Ministry of Industry and Advanced Technology seeks to provide the next generation of experts and leaders with a close look at standardization, conformity assessment and its impact on technology, and enable them to connect with experts about the latest developments in future industries, electrical and electronic technologies and ICT. This will come as part of the framework of supporting the national strategy for industry and advanced technology – Operation 300bn – and the country’s strategy towards achieving the 2030 sustainable development goals.
