Mubasher: Qatar and the European Union (EU) are on the verge of finalising an air transport agreement, CEO of state-owned Qatar Airways said on Tuesday.

Qatar, the world's richest country per capita, seeks to be the first GCC nation to conclude a comprehensive air transport deal with the EU, Akbar Al-Baker added at the Qatar Aviation Aeropolitical and Regulatory Summit.

Under the deal, Qatar will no longer obligate European carriers to have a local sales agent for operating flights to Doha.

Qatar’s flagship airline, along with other Gulf airlines Emirates and Etihad Airways, has previously faced accusations of being unfairly state-subsidised over other carriers.

Qatar reached an agreement with the US in 2018 to disclose detailed financial information about the state-owned Gulf carrier.
