Abu Dhabi: For the purpose of enhancing the safety and security of school transport, the Integrated Transport Centre (ITC) in Abu Dhabi has recently conducted an awareness workshop for bus drivers and supervisors. The workshop addressed the necessity of conforming to all the requirement of safety and security as provided in the school transport legislations in order to preserve the safety of our children.

Bus drivers and supervisors were reminded of their responsibilities during the workshop like the necessity of everyday checkups of the condition of the bus, to ensure its eligibility and safety. Also, after the students have disembarked the bus, the drivers and supervisors should assure the lack of presence of any student. Additionally, first aid kits should be available in the buses, drivers should obey the speed limits and keep at the specified lane of the bus.

Moreover, drivers and supervisors were told not to permit any student to disembark the bus unless it is his/her assigned area, and to oblige every student to wear a seat belt. Furthermore, stop and warning signs must be used while students cross the street. In addition to that, students under the age of 11 years old are required be provided with assistance to safely cross the street and to be handed over to one of the guardians.

The workshop has also raised the awareness of drivers on fines, most recurring and dangerous offenses, along with its legal accountability which may lead to termination and deportation of the offender, in order to avoid these offenses.

It is worth to mention that this workshop is one of multiple workshops that are planned for the summer in preparation for the next academic year. This is in part of ITC’s endeavor to raise the level of awareness and joint responsibility towards others, reinforcing the level of knowledge in assigned tasks of each individual, as well as the importance of cooperation to provide a safe school transport network.
