Quran recitation could be made compulsory in all Bahrain schools and training institutes under two amendments approved by MPs yesterday.

MPs approved amendments to both the 2005 Education Law and the 1998 Private Educational and Training Establishments Law.

The rule would be enforced at both private and public facilities, but must first be drafted as official legislation by the government before being resubmitted to the National Assembly for voting.

Parliament also approved amendments to the 2006 People With Disability Care, Rehabilitation and Employment Law, which would give 50pc discounts on all government services for people with disabilities – and discount cards – in partnership with the private sector.

However, a proposed amendment to the 2002 Parliament Bylaws that would have prevented MPs from speaking during proposal presentations was rejected.
