Dubai: As part of its holistic approach to education, Canadian University Dubai (CUD) has set up a music studio on campus. Students of business, science, engineering, architecture and communications can now channel their creative flair in a dedicated space kitted out with an array of musical instruments.
The music facilities have been complemented by the recent unveiling of a grand piano at the University’s Red Theatre, adding to an impressive collection of musical resources that aim to modernise the educational experience through holistic learning approaches and give students a new outlet for personal development.
One such student is Feras Ayman, a senior in the Bachelor of Health Organization Management program, who has earned a special talent scholarship at the University for his musical abilities. A composer, guitarist and drummer, Feras is a regular performer with groups across Dubai.
“Music has influenced my creativity in so many ways and it is a skill that has given me a new drive to grow and become better. CUD has a great music offering with studio space that encourages beginners to get involved and learn something new and enjoyable while they’re on campus”, Feras said.
Fellow student Faisal Alkhani, who has also been awarded a special talent scholarship, is a classically trained pianist who is now involved in peer tutoring piano at CUD. Majoring in Environmental Health Management, Faisal says the new grand piano is a welcome addition to the University’s expanding music offering.
The music studio is now home to the University’s Music Club and is equipped with practice instruments, as well as microphones and audio equipment for vocal practice. The space hosts everything from beginners’ piano lessons to musical meditation sessions.
Managing the University’s musical initiatives is CUD Music Coordinator, Mr Rivaan Mager, who is also one of the founders of the Dubai EnSENble, UAE's first choir for people of determination. The choir has delivered a number of recitals at CUD and also performed at the spectacular opening ceremony of Special Olympics World Games 2019 in Abu Dhabi .
Rivaan said, “We wanted to establish these dedicated resources at the University to encourage participation in music for students of any discipline at any level, not simply those who are established performers.
“Music is an excellent extracurricular pursuit and can help students to develop important life skills such as self-discipline and teamwork in an enjoyable way and all then while discovering a new talent. It is also a wonderful way to unite communities and share creativity,” Rivaan added.
The University now has an established program of musical events each month, including regular recitals on the newly installed grand piano.
