• Enables IT agility and flexibility, eases complexity of management, reduces support costs and supports customers’ regulatory compliance requirements

Riyadh, Saudi Arabia - Nutanix (NASDAQ: NTNX) a leader in private cloud, hybrid, and multicloud computing, announced that Saudi based Abdul Latif Jameel Information Services Co. (ALJISR) has implemented Nutanix Hyperconverged Infrastructure (HCI) technology in addition to deploying Nutanix Prism Pro management solution. The solution has ensured high availability of mission-critical applications and services, resulted in cost savings of around US$ 50,000 per year on IT support costs, reduced management complexities and supports regulatory compliance requirements of customers.

ALJISR is a part of holding company Abdul Latif Jameel – a conglomerate that comprises diversified businesses across financial services, transportation, engineering and manufacturing, health, real estate, energy and environmental services, with deep roots in the Middle East, North Africa, and Turkey (MENAT region). ALJISR provides business intelligence and information services to its internal customers.

Speaking about the criticality of the company’s services, Mr. Syed Tariq, General Manager, Information Technology at ALJISR explains, “Our role is to provide sensitive and mission-critical, information services to group companies within the Abdul Latif Jameel group – such as reports relating to customer’s credit worthiness as well as KYC and Sanction list name-check. As such our systems and applications need to be up and running 24x7. Being a service provider to companies that are regulated by authorities like SAMA and NCSA, we need to be compliant with the same stringent standards expected of these companies.”

Mr. Tariq realized that the legacy IT infrastructure, which was a mix of several disparate systems, could not cope with the demands of the business and required modernization. There were several challenges - the complexities of the cumbersome environment made it an administrative nightmare; the monitoring solution was unreliable; application recovery took over an hour despite the fact that a key compliance requirement was an RTO of 15 minutes; there were frequent end-user complaints relating to failures of the key reporting application; and most importantly, the infrastructure could not support upgrades to the latest virtualization software versions.

It was decided that Hyperconverged Infrastructure (HCI) was the way forward and after an intensive evaluation of the leading vendors in the market, a decision was taken to opt for Nutanix. “We were looking at an all-in-one HCI platform that was easy to manage, flexible and scalable, provided strong virtualization capabilities, was interoperable with other technologies and introduced cost efficiencies. Nutanix ticked all these boxes,” says Mr. Tariq.

The benefits were realized soon after the implementation. One of the most demanding, compute-intensive, analytical application based on SAS platform which used to frequently fail while generating reports using the earlier infrastructure, has experienced 100% uptime ever since the installation of the Nutanix solution. “End-users of such reports usually are compliance departments, and such abrupt failures were cause of great concern as timely reports are needed to monitor compliance to stringent financial regulations. Failure to generate real-time reports also has a direct impact on the bottom line. Newly acquired high availability for real-time applications has greatly improved end user experience from an operational perspective. Nutanix has dispelled all of these worries by ensuring round-the-clock availability of systems and applications,” explains Mr. Tariq.

With the earlier infrastructure involving three systems and three different vendors, annual support costs were very high and Mr. Tariq estimates that Nutanix has saved the company a significant amount of approximately US$ 50,000 per year. Equally impressive is the fact that IOPS has seen a 200% increase in performance.

Elaborating on the administrative benefits, Mr. Tariq is very complimentary about Nutanix Prism – the vendor’s infrastructure management solution that provides granular visibility and control through a single pane of glass. “Since our IT team is small, our objective was to have minimum intervention when it comes to infrastructure management. Nutanix Prism has delivered on this expectation and eliminated complexity in IT operations with its ‘one-click’ feature,” he says.

In terms of future plans, Mr. Tariq envisages that ALJISR may receive requests for new compliance related applications to be introduced. “If we didn’t standardize on Nutanix, then for every compute-intensive new application, we would have to rely on expensive hardware upgrades. But now due to the scalability of the platform, all we need to do is add more nodes which is an easy and inexpensive alternative. We will of course keep a close eye on Nutanix’s product roadmap and will enter into discussions when we feel that we could take further advantage of the company’s new technology innovations,” he concludes.
