Global infrastructure consultancy AECOM announced on Wednesday that it has been selected to provide the airside construction supervision and quality control services for The Red Sea project's planned international airport.

Conforming with developer The Red Sea Development Company (TRSDC)'s sustainability goals, the entire airport infrastructure will be completely powered by renewable energy, the consultancy said in a press statement.

Designed by Foster + Partners, the airport will be capable of serving one million domestic and international passengers per year when it opens in 2022, the statement said.

It said work is set to commence next month, following the completion of essential groundwork.

AECOM's scope, according to the statement, includes the oversight of the airside infrastructure construction, the design and building of a 3,700-metre 'Code F' runway, a 'Code B' seaplane runway, parallel and link taxiways and pavement works, aeronautical navigational aids, aerodrome ground lighting, airside utilities, helipads, roads and associated buildings.

"AECOM is excited to partner with The Red Sea Development Company to bring this iconic project to life," said Lara Poloni, AECOM's president.

"This key award confirms The Red Sea Development Company's trust in the depth of our resources both within the Kingdom and across the region and our ability to deliver specialized aviation-related services for this strategic project," added Ian Laski, chief executive and president of AECOM Arabia.

On Monday, TRSDC had awarded the sustainable transport consultancy contract for the project to Mott MacDonald.
