  • Using a playful approach, the unique pieces take inspiration from simple materials like children’s Play-Doh to create fun, surrealist forms

Dubai, UAE: - An emerging Dubai-based design studio made its regional debut at the fifth edition of Dubai Design Week 2019. DesignKraft, established in 2017 by Sidarth Menon, exhibited its newest collection ‘Ideas Taking Shape’ as part of Downtown Editions at Dubai’s annual design fair Downtown Design. Downtown Editions is Downtown Design’s dedicated showcase of bespoke and limited-edition design pieces by established and emerging local and regional designers. DesignKraft’s collection features statement pieces, dining sets, lighting and installations, which incorporate bold and bright colours and use a range of innovative materials that take inspiration from everyday life.

DesignKraft is an end-to-end design studio combined with a full-scale joinery and fabrication facility, which reflects the company’s values of freedom and creativity. The ‘Ideas Taking Shape’ collection is based on basic shapes reimagined in a playful and creative way. The objects are both simple and striking, surreal yet familiar and they speak a language of sophistication and emotion.

Collection pieces include the Bubble Gum Table, the Mirror Moods Make Up Table, and Marble Moon coffee table. Menon took inspiration for these items while playing with Play-Doh with his young daughter. The Bubble Gum Table comprises a variety of hand-crafted metal balls that resemble gobstoppers. They are arranged in a whimsical manner that seem to challenge, rather than defy the laws of physics while supporting a beautiful pink Onyx marble countertop. The Mirror Moods Make Up table is specifically designed in bright and playful colours reflecting the right mood in which one should apply make-up. Back-lit and bronzed accents add grace and finish to the piece which is made from geometric forms. The Marble Moon coffee table warrants a second look. Designed using simple shapes that create striking results, these pieces have an intriguing aesthetic, appearing differently depending on the angles that they are viewed from.

Sidarth Menon, founder of DesignKraft said: “We are a young company borne from a labour of love and we have evolved in an organic manner. Our participation in Dubai Design Week gave us a platform to show an international audience our creativity and capability. We design unique pieces with the individual in mind, but which also speak a universal language. The reason I set up this company is to inspire people to embrace their own creativity and showing at a design fair allowed us to reach new audiences. We take a fun and playful approach while producing high quality objects that fuse design principles with flair and character.”

DesignKraft was established in Dubai in 2017. Its founder Sidarth Menon began his career in finance and private equity. Driven by a lifelong passion for design, art and architecture, he branched out in recent years and DesignKraft is one of two companies he has set up in Dubai. The company was founded as a platform for people to express their individuality through design, by marrying the freedom and creativity of a design studio with the capabilities of a full-scale joinery and fabrication facility.
