FRANKFURT, Aug 17 (Reuters) - Germany wants Lufthansa LHAG.DE to take over a major part of insolvent carrier Air Berlin's AB1.DE assets, Transport Minister Alexander Dobrindt told German daily Rheinische Post.

"We need a national champion in international aviation," the paper on Thursday quoted him as saying.

"That is why it is urgently necessary that Lufthansa can take over significant parts of Air Berlin," he said.

Lufthansa declined to comment.
