MANAMA: The Education Ministry has put in place plans to overcome challenges caused by the coronavirus pandemic.

Technical issues may arise due to massive pressure on the e-learning portal with the ministry reporting 7.7 million visits two weeks after the start of the new academic year, Education Minister Dr Majid Al Nuaimi told media and newspaper representatives.

He said 64 per cent of 112,000 parents who took part in a survey conducted by the ministry chose distance learning for their children.

However, doors are open for children wishing to attend in-person classes, he said, adding 2,860 students have transferred from private to public schools this year.

Talks are now underway with the Royal Humanitarian Foundation on distribution of 10,000 laptops to needy students. Eligibility criteria have been laid down and will be unveiled soon, he pointed out.

He said 388 textbooks have been turned into digital format, 60 school books at all levels have been reviewed and developed, 507 enrichment lessons were designed for students with learning difficulties and 368 lessons uploaded through the educational portal, in addition to providing lessons in sign language for deaf students.

Meanwhile, the ministry has started supplying textbooks to schools which will in turn distribute them to students. Social distancing and precautionary measures have been enforced to protect students, parents, administrative and teaching staff.
