MANAMA: Bahrain's King yesterday called for more efforts and projects to increase oil and gas production in Bahrain, to bolster its strategic standing as an economic hub in the region, boost the industrial sector and raise the standard of living of Bahraini citizens.

His Majesty King Hamad made the remarks as he received, at Sakhir Palace, Oil Minister Shaikh Mohammed bin Khalifa Al Khalifa, accompanied by Tatweer Petroleum chief executive James Kenneth Eastlack and exploration and development director general Yahya Al Ansari.

The King discussed with the officials strategic plans for exploration and development, implemented in accordance with the royal directives to strengthen national revenue sources.

The King commended the vital role played by the Committee on Natural Resources and Economic Security, chaired by His Royal Highness Prince Salman bin Hamad Al Khalifa, Crown Prince, Deputy Supreme Commander and First Deputy Premier, in co-operation with the Oil Ministry.

He hailed the efforts exerted by all workers in the industrial sector to develop the oil sector, hailing ambitious investment plans and projects aimed at enhancing the role of this vital field, which represents one of the main pillars of the national economy and the development momentum.

“Bahrain is determined to continue the development programmes in all sectors to serve the nation and meet citizens’ aspirations to decent living conditions,” the King said.

He praised Bahrain’s pioneering achievements in various fields thanks to the efforts of its loyal people, and hailed the latest achievement which represented one of the largest oil discoveries in the country’s history of shale oil and deep gas. He commended the efforts exerted by the Oil Minister and Tatweer Petroleum to draw up strategic plans to benefit from the massive discovery.

The minister updated the King on latest developments in the exploration and production of oil and gas in four main axes – Bahrain Oilfield output, deep gas production, Bahrain Bay shale oil development and drilling at the maritime concessions.

He was also updated about the latest developments in the drilling of a number of experimental wells to extract oil in commercial quantities.
