Hundreds of tonnes of fresh produce have arrived in Bahrain to bolster the local market and meet the demand for fruits and vegetables, it has emerged.

According to the Bahrain Chamber of Commerce and Industry (BCCI) food wealth committee chairman Khalid Al Amin, the import of around 1,400 tonnes of fresh produce will help lower the prices significantly.

The consignments have arrived from Jordan, Palestine, Saudi Arabia, the UAE, Oman, Pakistan, Syria, Yemen, and Egypt.

“Forty-four trucks arrived in Bahrain, contributing to a noticeable drop, between 50 per cent to 70pc, in the prices of vegetables such as tomatoes, cucumbers and onions, among others,” said Mr Al Amin yesterday.

“The wholesale price of five kilos of Jordanian potatoes is BD2, while the same amount of Pakistani potatoes costs BD1.

“Egyptian potatoes which cost around BD3 are now priced at BD2 and onions cost 300 fils per kilo and these are all wholesale prices.”

Mr Al Amin said 40 tonnes of bananas have arrived along with apples and vegetables.

Committee members, who visited the markets at dawn yesterday, said they were stable, urging people not to panic.
