UAE-based passengers flying with Emirates can now board their flights without the need for presenting a physical COVID-19 certificate.

The airline and the Dubai Health Authority announced on Sunday that they have started implementing full digital verification of COVID-19 medical records connected to testing and vaccination for flyers based in the UAE.

“Emirates customers who have undertaken a PCR test in Dubai can choose to check in without presenting their physical COVID-19 PCR test report,” a statement said.

The integrated paperless system, said to be a first in the world, is intended to shorten processing times for customers departing from Dubai International Airport.

Prior to the digital verification, passengers were required to hold a negative test certificate before departure.

“We are delighted to take this step within the aviation sector to cooperate with DHA in linking our systems together to enhance the customer experience by processing the relevant documents in a more efficient, secure and effective manner,” said Adel Al Redha, chief operating officer for Emirates Airline.

The airline had earlier started trials of the International Air Transport Association (IATA) travel pass – a mobile app that seeks to help passengers easily manage their travel during the pandemic.

The app is designed to be a one-stop registry for flyers to get up to date on what tests, vaccines and other measures they require prior to travel. It will also enable passengers to digitally share their tests and vaccination results.

The trial is being done on selected Emirates flights from Dubai to Barcelona and London Heathrow to Dubai.
