Cairo – Mubasher: Almost 17 solar power plants in Benban, Aswan, have been linked to the national electricity grid, the head of electricity sector projects in Upper Egypt said.

The new solar power project, recently awarded the first rank among projects implemented by the World Bank, will involve the construction of 32 plants over 8,430 acres for generating clean solar power, state-run news agency MENA reported, citing Ahmed Fathy.

The project is set for completion in September with a production capacity of 1,465 megawatts and up to $1 billion in investments, Fathy highlighted.

Four substations were built, namely Benban 1, Benban 2, Benban 3, and Benban 4, at a cost of EGP250 million each, he stressed, adding that each will operate at 22/220 kilovolt to transfer clean generated power to the unified national grid.

Each substation of the four connects nine solar power plants, he pointed out.

Fathy noted that almost 12 solar plants have begun operation at Benban project, while the rest of the plants are still under construction.

The project offers around 20,000 temporary and permanent jobs, he said.
