Egypt’s Minister of Environment Yasmine Fouad met, on Sunday, with representatives of the US company, 3i Energy, to discuss the possibility of implementing a project to convert waste into biofuel in Fayoum governorate.

The minister listened to a presentation on the project’s objectives and the technology used to produce biofuel from waste and derivative products such as hydrogen and paraffin, which can be used in a number of other industries.

During the meeting, Fouad confirmed that Egypt is currently implementing a new system for solid waste management with a different vision that relies on making the most of solid waste to reduce as much as possible the refuse that are buried in sanitary landfills, thus helping realise the idea of a revolving economy and sustainable development.

She explained that the state has started creating the necessary infrastructure to implement the new system within the first program of the system, which includes the establishment of landfills, intermediate stations and appropriate recycling mechanisms.

The second program of the system includes preparing operating contracts for collection operations, transportation, street cleaning, the operation of landfills and stations, and the establishment of recycling and treatment factories.

Whilst, the third program includes technical and institutional support and community participation, whether by issuing regulating laws, involving the private sector, civil society and the informal sector in the system, and raising societal awareness

This project comes within the “3i Energy” company’s endeavor to establish projects that improve the environment and reduce carbon. The project is expected to achieve various advantages that serve the local community in Fayoum.

It will contribute to raising the level of cleanliness, and creating one of the green financing mechanisms that will benefit local communities.

Besides the biodiesel and alternative fuels, the project will produce products that can be used for fertilisation in agriculture.
