Kuwait intends to invite foreign companies in an international auction to build and operate a cargo village it is planning to construct near its airport, a newspaper in the Gulf OPEC producer reported on Tuesday.

The Civil Aviation Authority (CAA) has requested the Finance Ministry to approve the project which involves design, construction, operation and maintenance of the facility, the Arabic language daily Alqabas said, quoting CAA sources.

The cargo village will be built on a sprawling site West of Kuwait’s International Airport and is part of a master plan to develop the logistics industry in the emirate, it said.

The project involves the main contract and several other projects and investment opportunities associated with the cargo village, it noted.

“The main project covers preparation of designs, construction of the main buildings, development of the cargo village and building of associated facilities for storage and distribution, operation of the facility and maintenance services,” it said, adding that the project also comprises car parks and offices for shipping companies.

According to the report, only companies with relevant experience will be allowed to take part in the auction for the project, which will largely increase public logistics revenue.

Operators of the cargo village will be required to identify investment opportunities associated with the project, including the construction of repair and maintenance zone, building of rail networks serving the village and facilities for support services, it said.
