Kuwait Ports Authority (KPA) announced on Tuesday the start of work for the first phase of its 48.75-million Kuwaiti dinar ($160 million) Shuwaikh Port redevelopment and expansion project.

The contract was awarded to a joint venture of South Korea’s Hyundai and local firm Gulf Dredging & General Contracting, a report by state-owned news agency KUNA said.

The construction period is 36 months, the report said.

KUNA said the project involves the redevelopment and expansion of docks with a total length of 1,330 metres, maintenance of Western dock and maintenance of the suspended part of Dock 8.

In September 2022, Hyundai Engineering and Construction (Hyundai E&C) had announced that it received a letter of award for the additional construction and renovation of the Shuwaikh Port from the Kuwait Port Authority (KPA).

“Hyundai E&C is expected to improve the ports existing aging facilities and build a total of 7 berths, including 6 berths for general cargo vessels and 1 berth for cargo vessels, to help boost logistics and economic development in Kuwait,” the Korean company had said in a press statement, adding that its share of the contract value is 70 percent.
