Volvo, the leading Swedish car manufacturer, has announced today the launch of Volvo V50 in the Middle East. The V50 2006 offers cleanly styled Swedish design, uncompromising safety standards and the spaciousness of a wagon, all in a compact package.

The V50 is available in three engines; the 140-horsepower, 2.4 litre five-cylinder, the 170-horsepower, 2.4 litre five-cylinder, and the 220-horsepower, turbo-charged 2.5 litre in the T5. It offers 6-speed manual gearbox for more active and fun drive as well as 5 speed "Geartronic" transmission.

"The V50 is an exciting addition to our Volvo offering in the UAE," said Richard Selfe, Sales and Marketing Manager - Volvo, Trading Enterprises. "The latest design is quite a departure, as it offers the traditional space and safety elements of the V50 but its compact size and stylish interior and shape make it a worthy competitor for some of the higher priced offerings in the market."

"Safety is one of Volvo's core values, and despite the V50's neat appearance, it has a number of innovative safety features, including crumple zones, anti-lock brakes, traction control, and specially reinforced rear seats to prevent heavy objects in the boot hitting passengers in a collision. The car also offers built-in child booster elements in the rear seats to ensure correct use of the three-point seat belts. This concern for safety makes the V50 a terrific choice for a family car."

The car's luggage compartment is practical and easy to use, with vertical side windows and a totally flat load floor. In addition, the front passenger seat can be folded, making it possible to carry an object as long as three metres.

Being marketed as a 'sportwagon', the V50 features flowing styling and design cues that are light years away from the 'boxy' look that Volvo wagons were once known for. The rounded roofline and abrupt tail, together with a V-shaped bonnet and narrowing stern give it a modern athletic appearance. The interior is Scandinavian minimalist at its best, offering a sleek and sporty look that also provides a truly comfortable ride.

Its functionality and generous size are belied by its sheer roadworthiness. The three engines offer a thrilling and smooth drive, with high levels of responsiveness and stability, making it suitable for both highways and winding mountain roads. In addition, it provides intensely accurate electro-hydraulic power steering. The chassis features Macpherson struts in front and multilink rear suspension based on trailing arms.
