The master plan of The Medical City (TMC) in Salalah, Oman has been completed by Atkins, one of the world's largest design and engineering consultancies. The aim of this integrated healthcare infrastructure development project is to make the most of Salalah's natural beauty and serene environment to ensure TMC becomes a preferred destination of rehabilitation and medical tourism.
Dr. Abdulla Aljoaib, President of Apex Medical Group, said that Atkins' task was to prepare the overall strategic master plan of TMC on the 800,000 sq. meter site, located by the Arabian Sea, in order to deliver a vision for a destination that will:
- Create a sense of place that is defined by the phrase "World-Class Medical City"
- Create a destination that will be memorable, dynamic and can be recognized as a place for healing and wellness.
- Create a world-class medical education and research and development facility in partnership with internationally known and recognized institutions.
- Create a cohesive and carefully planned sustainable urban environment, offering distinct character and a high quality of life for its residents as well as the opportunity to attract and promote investment, generate jobs and strengthen the city's economy.
This project, being undertaken by the Apex Medical Group, represents the largest private healthcare infrastructure development opportunity in Oman. With a spectacular location and intelligent design, this Medical City is poised to become the centerpiece of healthcare tourism benefitting local, regional and international healthcare patients alike.
Located East of Salalah, it will become a first-rate healthcare centre for both the local community and the international health tourism market. The 800,000sqm complex, with a built up area of 500,000 sq meters, will provide much more than traditional hospital facilities. It will look to create a destination that inspires and motivates people towards a healthier and happier lifestyle in the 21st century.
Surrounding the hospital will be a number of facilities that will identify Medical City as an international centre of healthcare best practice. These include a high end hotel, spa, educational and training facilities for doctors and nurses and a wellbeing centre, alongside accommodation, commercial and service facilities for visitors and resident.
Atkins' design concept combines traditional Omani vernacular with contemporary design. Naturally, the Transplant Hospital will be the heart of the city, providing patients with the most advanced methods of healthcare.
The sustainability goals for TMC have been drawn from the 'One Planet Living' program, which is internationally recognized as a framework for addressing sustainability in development projects.
The 'One Planet Living' goals are to achieve or secure:
• Carbon reduction
• Waste reduction
• Sustainable transport
• Local and sustainable materials
Dr. Abdulla Aljoaib who is a Civil engineer by profession also mentioned that the objective of designing a 21st Century Medical City is to follow a tight technology brief, which is structured to create a ubiquitous converged IP network environment throughout the development. Integrated Communications Technology (ICT) will be used to integrate all components of the medical city and Atkins has proven capability in the delivery of the sophisticated levels of technical engineering necessary in healthcare building and MEP design.
Ray Phillips, Atkins' design director for the project, said: "This is an important and exciting project for the region which will create world class medical facilities in an environment which supports and promotes rehabilitation and healthy living."
With 18,000 staff, Atkins is one of the world's leading multidisciplinary consultancies. The company has been working across the GCC region for more than 40 years and has 1,800 staff across each of the GCC countries.
