Regional Developer Community Reaches Tens of Thousands and Growing
As part of GITEX 2005, Sun Microsystems Middle East & North Africa is marking the 10th anniversary of Java - the collaborative platform that has formed the basis of enterprise computing, web services and open source among other domains.
To celebrate the decade of innovation, Sun is showcasing the latest release of its Java Desktop System, as well as the latest version of its office productivity suite, StarOffice.
The first version of Java coincided in 1995 with the opening of Sun's first regional office in the MENA region. Since then, Java has been Arabized with input from regional developers and Sun employees based in the Middle East, and the regional community of Java developers has reached more than 10,000.
"The Middle East region is incredibly bullish on Java as it becomes more collaborative, competitive and compatible to exploit the full potential of its open standards and multiply its applications in diverse verticals with new technology, training and tools. Just as Sun MENA is fully developing the potential of industry sectors such as education, government, and banking, so is our development community building vertical Java-based solutions for those sectors," said Chris Cornelius, managing director, Sun MENA.
Java, originally code-named Oak, is now driving a global economy estimated to be more than $100 billion in sales annually, contributing to an additional $110 billion in related IT spending. The global Java technology-based community includes 4.5 million developers, 1 billion Java Card systems, 700 million PCs shipped with Java technology, 708 million Java technology-powered phones and more than 140 telecommunications carriers who deploy Java technology.
