Visitors make a beeline for OPAL's stand at the Expo

Muscat: Oman Society for Petroleum Services (OPAL) has always been on the lookout for innovative and effective solutions in relation to traffic safety issues in the Sultanate. In showing its commitment towards achieving road safety culture all throughout the Sultanate, OPAL participated at the Second Oman Traffic Safety Expo which was held during the period from 18 to 20 October 2011.

Over the three days of the exhibition, OPAL organised raffle draws distributing free Defensive Driving Courses to 30 visitors. With this initiative, OPAL attempts to prioritize and promote traffic safety in the workplace in order to contribute in attaining safety and security among the company's employees.

"The strategic objective of OPAL's participation in the Traffic Safetry Exhibition is to encourage safer behaviour to reduce the number of people killed and injured on our roads every year," said Mohamed Al-Harthy, CEO of OPAL.

Speaking about OPAL's successful participation OPAL at the Traffic Safety Expo 2011, Simon Davies, HSE Executive Manager, OPAL pointed out: "OPAL stall had successful attendance during the three day ROP Road Safety Exhibition, we also had success with awarding 30 free seats on defensive driving courses. The successful candidates have been notified, we hope to complete their free training course by the end of 2011, then we will look ahead for phase 2 of our approach to training the future in 2012."

OPAL actively promotes traffic safety awareness targeting not only their employees, but also the whole community. Briefing on the initiative of holding Defensive Driving Courses, Moatasim Al Bulushi, Communications Executive Manager said, "Defensive Driving Light Vehicle Blacktop is the cornerstone of the SAFEDRIVE suite of Defensive Driving Courses. The course teaches delegates appropriate attitudes and develops driving skills. The assessment comprises a driving skill assessment delivered to the Assessor by the delegate to confirm training. Besides, this course is suitable for those personnel required to drive during the course of their occupation and those commuting to and from their place of work even if they aren't required to drive at work. The main aim of the course is to promote safe driving behavior and eliminate the instances of motor vehicle crashes."

Through the members forums and committees, OPAL has been looking at the issues and variety of subjects of interests to OPAL members particularly in HR and HSE areas such as road safety, fatigue management, minimum wages, employee relations, and etc. In HSE, there have been great strides over the years, in particular, the road safety.

Mohamed Al-Harthy took the opportunity to thank OPAL members companies specially the training institutes (TATI, STS, OTI and NTI) for generously providing over 30 free defensive driving courses to the public. The OPAL teams who has done a great job in the exhibition and who will follow up on how the 30 candidate are doing and compare the change in their behaviors before and after the defensive driving training is completed.

It should be noted that the Traffic Safety Expo 2011 was busy throughout the three days with a steady stream of visitors aiming in reducing traffic-related fatalities and injuries. Feedbacks from more than 42,000 visitors to the exhibition showed a strong commitment from the Omani society on significance of this awareness event.
