Crouching Tiger on Showtime in November
The first foreign-language film ever to receive 10 Academy Award nominations including Best Picture, and win four (Best Foreign Language Film, Best Cinematography, Best Set Decoration, and Best Music), Crouching Tiger, Hidden Dragon premieres on Showtime’s Movie Channel in November.
Starring Chow Yun-Fat and Michelle Yeoh, this epic story chronicles the efforts of seasoned 19th-century warriors to recover a stolen prized sword. The dazzling and poetic martial-arts scenes boosted U.S. box office receipts to over $130 million.
The story begins when Yun-Fat returns from a meditative retreat having decided to give up his warrior profession. He asks Yeoh to deliver the powerful sword to a court official as a sign of his resolve. No sooner has Yeoh delivered the sword than it is stolen. So begins the adventure and ends Yun-Fat’s self-imposed retirement.
Directed by Ang Lee (The Wedding Banquet and The Ice Storm) and choreographed by Yuen Woo-Ping (the fight director behind The Matrix), Crouching Tiger, Hidden Dragon feels more like an energetic dance – albeit, one not constrained by the laws of gravity – than a knock-about martial arts film.
Still, there are fierce fight scenes that thrill the audience with their fast and furious use of swords and a variety of other weapons. Some of the most striking fight scenes in cinematic history take place amid peaked temple roofs and swaying bamboo tree tops.
Unspoken promises, hidden identities, secret powers and romantic settings give the movie a timeless quality appropriate to the mythical nature of this universal story of good versus evil. Zhang Zhiyi also stars as a governor’s daughter whose involvement in the story becomes increasingly clear.
Honored with more than 81 movie awards worldwide and nominated for 79 others, Crouching Tiger, Hidden Dragon is an adventure movie not to be missed. It premieres on The Movie Channel, part of the Showtime television network, on Thursday November 7 at 21:00 KSA (22:00 UAE).
