Hospital appoints Consultant Paediatric Ophthalmologist and Strabismus Surgeon

24 November 2010 (Dubai, UAE): Moorfields Eye Hospital Dubai, the Dubai branch of the world-renowned London eye hospital, will put greater emphasis on children's eye and vision problems, with the appointment of its fifth consultant. Dr Clare Roberts, MA (Cantab), BM BCh (Oxon), FRCOphth. She has been appointed Consultant Paediatric Ophthalmologist and Strabismus Surgeon at the Dubai hospital and will join the Moorfields team of consultants in September. All the hospital's consultants are Moorfields London trained and are based permanently in the UAE.

Dr Roberts is an experienced consultant ophthalmologist specialising in the assessment and management of children with eye problems, as well as the management of adults with strabismus (crossed eye). She studied medicine both at Cambridge and Oxford University and trained in the UK, acquiring the Fellowship of the Royal College of Ophthalmologists, and completing her subspecialty training in paediatric ophthalmology and strabismus at Moorfields London. . Prior to joining Moorfields Eye Hospital Dubai, Dr Roberts was most recently a consultant at Imperial College NHS Trust in London, where she managed a large paediatric ophthalmology service including screening and treatment for retinopathy of prematurity. Dr Roberts has a research interest in amblyopia (lazy eye) and retinopathy of prematurity and has published  work in paediatric ophthalmology and strabismus.

Dr Roberts underwent fellowship at Moorfields London in Strabismus and Paediatric Ophthalmology, where she gained extensive experience in general paediatric ophthalmology, retinopathy of prematurity, strabismus surgery and botulinum toxin therapy for strabismus. Dr Roberts has a research interest in amblyopia (lazy eye) and retinopathy of prematurity and has published in paediatric ophthalmology and strabismus. Following a consultant role in the UK, Dr Roberts moved to Madrid, Spain, where she worked at the Ocular Motility Service of the Hospital Clinico San Carlos (University Complutense de Madrid) and gained experience in strabismus surgery under topical anaesthesia before returning to Moorfields London as a locum consultant.
