Leading next-generation law firm, McCarthy Denning is pleased to announce that leading Sharia law and Islamic finance expert, Sheikh Bilal Khan has joined the firm as a Partner and Global Head of Islamic Finance. Sheikh Bilal Khan, is dual-qualified in English and Shariah Law, and has won numerous accolades for his work. He belongs to a select group of Shariah Scholars who are regarded as the backbone of Islamic finance.

This is a significant hire for McCarthy Denning, as the firm builds its credentials in Shariah law in-line with increasing client demand and the firm’s growing presence in international corporate transactions and commercial advice.

Sheikh Bilal, who has over 20 years’ experience in Shariah law and Islamic finance, advises across a broad range of areas including drafting legal transactional documents, alternative forms of dispute resolution, advisory work and Islamic finance product structuring. He also conducts submissions of legal and Shariah opinions and provides expert evidence in court litigation.

Alongside his growing legal practice, Sheikh Bilal is Chief Islamic Finance Officer at the Astana International Financial Centre (AIFC), a Panel Member of Arbitrators at the AIFC International Arbitration Centre, a member of the AIFC Advisory Council on Islamic Finance, Secretary-General of the Malta Islamic Finance Association and Co-Chairman of Dome Advisory.

This appointment follows the recent addition of high-calibre lateral hires at McCarthy Denning and strengthens the firm’s broad international corporate and commercial offering to clients. In January 2019, McCarthy Denning acquired three new Partners: Dawn Osborne and David Sant joined the Intellectual Property (IP) team and Jon Yorke who works across the firm’s Corporate and Insurance teams.

Commenting on his appointment, Sheikh Bilal says:

“I am honoured to be joining McCarthy Denning and look forward to working alongside a strong team of high-calibre lawyers across the firm. I am sure our combined international network of clients will be delighted to learn that they can now benefit from the firm’s rapidly-expanding, world-class multi-disciplinary team.”

Warren Woolridge, Co-founder, and CEO of McCarthy Denning commented:

“We would like to extend a warm welcome to Sheikh Bilal who is one of the most experienced  lawyers in Shariah Law and Islamic finance practicing in the UK and internationally. This is an important step for McCarthy Denning as we look to expand  the team’s financing transactions and dispute resolution capabilities in key  jurisdictions, including the GCC and the MENA region.”

About McCarthy Denning
Founded in 2013, McCarthy Denning is the original next-generation law firm offering clients senior-level advice across a wide range of corporate and commercial disciplines. The firm also has experienced corporate financiers as part of its team which broadens the scope of advice it can give.

The firm operates a flat structure (eschewing the pyramid structure traditionally adopted by large law firms) with highly experienced lawyers operating within a vastly-reduced-overhead environment. The firm has a high-tech approach at its core to provide greater efficiency through agile working.

McCarthy Denning recruits highly experienced lawyers (both partners and associates) selecting only those with the appropriate pedigree and credentials. The firm benefits from central London offices for hot-desking, bespoke meeting facilities, and administrative and marketing support. It also boasts a sophisticated technology platform which facilitates simplicity of working even in very large teams where required for significant transactions. The firm’s lawyers enjoy increased remuneration, the ability to control how, when and where they work and, for partners, much greater autonomy over fee arrangements.
