Kuwait, Kuwait; 25 March 2012 - The KD 57 million (US$ 206 m) project for the Study, Design and Construction, Operation & Maintenance of Pumping Station, Waste Water Treatment Plant and Pressure Mains in South of Amgara and South of New Jahra Area for the Ministry of Public Works Sanitary Engineering Department, Kuwait has been declared the national winner in Kuwait of MEED Quality Awards for Projects, the only awards programme in the GCC to recognise completed quality projects.

Judged by an independent panel consisting of respected experts in the projects industry, the MEED Quality Awards for Projects 2012 selected the project for its economic, social and environment impact, as well as innovations and achievements in design, engineering and construction.  Nominated by Mushrif Trading and Contracting Company, the Kubd Waste Water Treatment Plan and Pumping Station project is also being considered for the "GCC Water Reuse Project of the Year" award which will be announced in May 2012.

The project used new technologies in setting up facilities that led to reduction in government spending on operation and maintenance of several existing Pump Stations, pressure mains in the South Amgara and South Jahra areas and the waste water treatment plant at Jahra, which are very old and utilising outdated technologies.  The construction of new treatment plant results in production of high quality treated water (TSE) for irrigation and landscaping purposes and the sludge end-by-product are high quality to comply with "Class-A" requirement.

The demand for irrigation water to the farms in Abdally and Wafra areas shall be met with the operation of the new treatment plant at Kubd, which has the ability to handle high capacity. In addition, it has provided additional revenue streams to local businesses by sourcing from locally manufactured products; and has created a positive social impact on the local community the Kubd and Jahra areas because of the construction of the main access road, which will be part of a bigger road network in the future development of the area," said Dr. Fadel Safar Ali Safar, Minister of Public Works and State Minister for Planning and Development.

The construction of new treatment plant in Kubd allows for the cancellation of existing Jahra STP, which helped to reduce environmental pollution in the Jahra township and also minimizes the traffic congestion resulting from the movement of tankers in and out of the Jahra Treatment Plant for handling of raw sewage, treated effluent and Sludge.  Also the construction of deep pump station at Jahra allows for cancellation of the existing pumping stations at Sulaibikat & Jahra together with its associated pressure mains, thereby the sewage from the catchment areas flows by gravity through the Deep interceptor to Jahra Main Pump Station, from where it will be pumped to Kubd WWTP for further treatment.

"The MEED Quality Awards for Projects 2012 salutes the architects, engineers, builders, financiers and clients behind some of the biggest social and economic developments that will change the Middle East and the world for the better. MEED is honoured to produce an initiative that recognises best practice in the projects sector. These projects have shown that Kuwait and the GCC have come of age and are, in many respects, showing everyone else how to conceive, build and run great projects," said Edmund O'Sullivan, chairman of the judging panel of the MEED Quality Awards for Projects.

Besides Kuwait, national winners were also selected from amongst projects completed in Bahrain, Oman, Qatar, Saudi Arabia and the UAE.
