Muscat: With an intention to foster national expertise as part of the objectives outlined in the Oman Vision 2040, Eshraqa, Khimji Ramdas’ Social Development Arm organised a ‘Leadership Beyond Role’ workshop for Sultan Qaboos University deans, and deputy deans at their main campus recently.
This unique programme on leadership development was conceptualised by mentors from Eshraqa on the invite of His Highness Sayyid Dr. Fahad bin Al Julanda Al Said, the Vice Chancellor of Sultan Qaboos University (SQU).
The one-day “Leadership Beyond Role” workshop integrated the leadership spectrum by making participants work on two of the world-renowned case studies used by some of the best management education institutions like Harvard.
During the first case study, which was an extremely advanced simulation of the famous Mount Everest story of 1996, the participants experienced challenging situations in which they took fitting and unfitting decisions as a team and as individuals. During the process, the participants experienced conflict between individual and team goals, and thereby developed a sound understanding of group dynamics, decision making and problem solving.
Through the second case study participants got acquainted with the transformational spectrum of leadership which had more of ‘leadership from below approach’ through the 2008 tragic Taj Hotel incident.
The workshop was concluded with a comprehensive discussion by the participants on the similarities of the challenges between the two real life case scenarios. They deliberated on group dynamics, decision making, problem solving, team building, customer-centric leadership, value driven organisational structure and employee empowerment.
In his concluding remarks, His Highness Sayyid Dr. Fahad bin Al Julanda Al Said thanked Eshraqa for putting up a valuable programme. He highlighted the key learning points of the programme and also expressed his desire to collaborate with Eshraqa for more human capital initiatives at SQU.
Nailesh Khimji, Director, the KR Group, Responsible for CSR Affairs (Eshraqa) said, “Leadership development is one of the crucial components of Oman Vision 2040. For us, the key to success of the workshop we conducted is to ensure that the objectives and the outcomes are aligned with goals of this vision. Oman under the visionary leadership of His Majesty Sultan Haitham bin Tarik is building a productive and diversified economy based on the objectives set out for the future and it is our duty to contribute towards a positive progress story. The Eshraqa initiative works towards the social progress of the nation and this workshop reaffirmed our commitment to Oman’s goals.”
Nadeem Ahmed, General Manager, Training and Consultancy, Khimji Ramdas Group said, “Leadership is the ability of an individual to lead, influence or guide another individual, group or organisation towards achieving a shared goal or vision. We are delighted that we received a positive response to the workshop which focussed on leading and managing - the two corners of the leadership spectrum.”
Engg. Salim Al Hinai, Director, Centre of Human Resource Development, SQU appreciated that the programme was highly experiential, and the learning was realistic. He also added that the strategies and skills they learned during the simulation will enhance their ability to communicate and promote better decision-making capability in real life while working in teams.
“We thank Eshraqa for conceptualising this extremely valuable workshop,” he said,
The programme helped participants increase their understanding of the definition of leadership and the differing styles of leadership under different contexts and scenarios. They studied the top-down approach which is more transactional in nature and requires more of a managerial skills and approach. They also learnt about the transformational leadership style which is often needed and is remarkably effective.
To achieve its ambitious vision, Eshraqa funds programmes across four pillars Including ‘Eshraqa Learns’, ‘Eshraqa Heals’, ‘Eshraqa Cares’ and ‘Eshraqa Mentors’. Over the years, Eshraqa has spread optimism and hope through its various community outreach initiatives. Eshraqa reaffirms its profound commitment for positive social change through its pillars of education, health, community wellbeing and training. Since inception, Eshraqa stands committed towards events and activities that further the Omani society towards success and prosperity.
