A high-level delegation from the Korean Prime Minister's Office recently visited the University of Wollongong in Dubai (UOWD) to study the university's academic and financial model in connection with the implementation of Korea's Global Education City which is being built on the picturesque island of Jeju.
The four-member delegation had a meeting with UOWD President, Prof. Ghassan Aouad, who explained how the branch campus of University of Wollongong succeeded in becoming one of the most prestigious institutions of higher learning in the Gulf region.
"University of Wollongong in Dubai was the first foreign university to be established in the UAE, as part of the government's vision to turn the country into an education and knowledge hub," said Prof. Ghassan. "The university has succeeded in establishing a fine balance between maintaining the quality standards set by the parent university and tailoring the programs to the local needs and environment."
The delegation from the Secretariat of the Council for Jeju Free International City Development Centre (JDC) consisted of Mr. Lim Suk-Kyu, Director General, Mr. Lee Sang Yeok, Deputy Director, Ms. Kumji Moon, General Manager and Ms. Yoon SooIn, Manager.
The delegation showed keen interest in the university's model in general and sought information on operating in free zones like Dubai Knowledge Village and Dubai International Academic City. The delegation members ended their visit with a tour of the UOWD campus.
The visit was facilitated by the Consulate General of the Republic of Korea in Dubai, as part of the delegation's larger mission of planning strategies for JDC, which has six core components: Myth and History Theme Park; Jeju Science Park; Global Education City; Residential Resort Complex; Jeju Healthcare Town and Residential Resort Complex.
Jeju Global Education City has been planned with a view to enhancing national competitiveness through the provision of global educational services in English medium, to counter the phenomenon of Koreans travelling abroad in search of higher education.
