For the second year in a row, the GIS Services Division (GISSD) of Khatib & Alami (K&A) teamed with Projacs International (PI) to conduct a 5-day course titled 'GIS Projects: from Inception till Implementation' between June 26 and 29, 2004 at the Safir Heliopolitan Hotel in Beirut, Lebanon. With the experience of GISSD in national and international projects for more than ten years and the expertise of Projacs in organizing training, the course was very well received.
Fourteen (14) participants from the Gulf countries, namely Saudi Arabia, Oman, Kuwait and Qatar attended the course. They represented governmental institutions, municipalities, and enterprises in various fields such as public work, utilities, telecommunication, and transportation.
The course aimed at sharing the GISSD experience in project management. 'It is an initiative to raise awareness in terms of understanding the GIS technology and capabilities so far blurred by various misconceptions' said Faisal Alami, director of the GISSD, at the opening session.
The course provided an overview of the state-of-the-art in GIS, dissected the GIS project life cycle from project inception till implementation, defined the principles of GIS project management, covered the various processes including understanding a Request for Proposal, writing a Proposal and delivering a GIS Project, and finally introduced GIS at work through several projects conducted by the GISSD.
Besides the entertaining visit to Jbeil, the course included site visits to the GISSD premises at K&A corporate offices where the staff are 'making it all happen'.
The participants very well acclaimed the course. They all expressed their satisfaction for the content and logistics and provided some interesting recommendations for future sessions. They commended Khatib & Alami's GIS Services Division staff and facilities.
