The Jordanian government referred the law amending the Patents Law No. 32 of 1999 to the Lower House calling on decision-makers to deal with it as a 'top priority'.

"The amendments added to the 1999 Patents Law aim at complying with the Kingdom's upcoming plans to join the Patent Cooperation Treaty (PCT)," Head of the Patents Section at the Directorate of Industrial Property (DIP) - Ministry of Industry and Trade, Hala Khdeiri told ag-IP-news Agency.

Last April, the Jordanian Cabinet approved to start with the necessary procedures to join the Madrid Protocol and the Patent Cooperation Treaty (PCT). Joining the international agreements requires amending national laws to be in conformity with the signed conventions and treaties.

"According to the PCT, Jordan will receive international patent applications which means that several procedures like the international preliminary examination of a patent and other terms like the national office, the registrar and the registry should be exactly defined by the Law," Khdeiri elaborated.

Joining the PCT is expected to benefit the Jordanian market and economy since more international patent applications are going to designate the Kingdom.

In addition, "the increasing number of patents will lead to establishing database banks for patents which will benefit the Jordanian companies especially the pharmaceuticals in their scientific research," she concluded.

According to recent statistics released by the DIP, the number of patent applications filed by Jordanians during the first six months of this year reached 92 applications, while the number of such applications reached 138 and 176 in 2002 and 2003, respectively.
