19 November 2013
HRH Raja Dr Nazrin Shah, Regent of Perak, Malaysia, and HE Shaukat Aziz, Former Prime Minister of Pakistan, will be the chief guests at the third annual Global Islamic Finance Awards (GIFA). The event is organised in conjunction with the World Islamic Retail Banking Conference (WIRBC) to be held on 26-27 November 2013 at Dubai. The annual award ceremony celebrates the progress and success of some of the most dynamic institutions, and applauds the contributions made by the finest talent the industry has to offer. GIFA honours banks, financial institutions, consultancies, rating agencies, insurance brokers and technology companies for their contribution and positive influence to the global Islamic banking and finance industry.

Other VIPs at the event will include HE Sanusi Lamido Sanusi, Governor of the Central Bank of Nigeria, HE Linar Yakupov, CEO of Tatarstan Investment Development Agency (TIDA), among others. The event is expected to attract leading figures from the Islamic banking and finance industry.

GIFA was developed by Edbiz Consulting, an Islamic finance consultancy arm of the London-based Edbiz Corporation. "The Global Islamic Finance Awards focus on best practices in Islamic finance and acknowledge success of distinguished players in the industry," observed Dr Amat Taap Manshor, CEO of Finance Accreditation Agency, Malaysia. He stressed that such recognition is essential as it promotes the kind of services that bring advancements to the industry.

"Award ceremonies are more than just bolstering the credentials of institutions and individuals that do excellent work in their respective fields," expressed Professor Humayon Dar, Founder of GIFA and Chairman of Edbiz Corporation. They reflect the diversity and strength of the industry. GIFA, over the last three years, has highlighted the remarkable growth of Islamic finance and the quality of the institutions and ideas the industry offers. "Every day the industry becomes stronger, and winners are the ones that make this so," said Professor Dar.

HE Shahid Malik, Former British Minister for International Development and a member of the Awards Committee, said, ""The Global Islamic Finance Awards stand out because of their strong independence and detailed quantitative methodology - a combination which ensures they command almost unrivalled respect across the industry." The inaugural GIFA was held on the occasion of the Oman Islamic Economic Forum 2011, which took place in Muscat on December 17-18, 2011. HE Tun Abdullah Badawi, Former Prime Minister of Malaysia, was the Special Guest and the recipient of the Global Leadership in Islamic Finance Award for his role in developing Islamic banking and finance during his tenure as prime minister. In 2012, this prestigious award was presented to HRH Raja Dr Nazrin Shah.
