Integrated Smart Card Reader function to offer increased security to corporate users of LIFEBOOK T3010

Dubai, September 23, 2003 Fujitsu Siemens Computers (FSC), the leading international IT vendor, has announced the launch of a new, convertible Tablet PC that combines the business critical mobility features of a notebook with the pen features of a Tablet PC. The LIFEBOOK T3010 will be available in the Middle East markets from November 2003, via the Value4You programme, an initiative of FSC to optimize the return on investment of the end-users.

Equipped with a 1.40 GHz Intel Pentium M processor with the Intel Centrino Mobile Technology Platform for simple and wireless communication, the LIFEBOOK T3010 can be used as a normal ultra portable notebook. However, with a simple flip over, the screen fits neatly atop the keyboard and converts the LIFEBOOK into a Tablet PC, providing the Tablet PC features for creating handwritten notes and drawings, as well as for annotation of documents, directly on screen. The active digitizer that enables the pen features is available both in the standard notebook mode and the Tablet mode, allowing the user to benefit from the pen enabled design in every situation.

Susanne Lewitzki, Product Marketing Manager, Middle East and North Africa, Fujitsu Siemens Computers, said "Since average computer systems cannot always meet customer specific requirements, we are customising the LIFEBOOK notebooks to the mobility needs of the professionals in the field. The combination of the notebook and the Tablet PC features will offer greater flexibility and functionality to the user."

"With new high-end technologies providing increased mobility to corporate IT users, the issue of security of the data and the networks is now of crucial importance. The value added features of security and manageability, like the smart card reader function, integrated into the LIFEBOOK T3010 are meant to satisfy the dynamic business critical computing of the end-users," added Lewitzki. "With the launch of the LIFEBOOK T3010, FSC is now the only vendor in the market who can offer the complete Tablet PC portfolio that includes the conventional slates in the Stylistic range, as well as the new convertible notebook."

Responding to the heightened security concerns of the corporate notebook users, FSC has integrated the smart card reader function in the PC Card controller of the LIFEBOOK T3010. Combined with a built-in security panel, which requires a user PIN to start the notebook, the smart card reader functionality provides a highly secure notebook to the end-user.

In view of the progressively increasing use of PCs, notebooks and work stations in business scenarios, managing an IT network in a large corporation is a complicated and time-consuming job. It is therefore significant that the LIFEBOOK T3010 has been equipped with the DeskView software, which is a manageability tool that allows the network administrator to enhance system management by providing detailed information about the devices in the network, while at the same time reducing his workloads.

Consisting of different functional modules, such as DeskInfo, DeskAlert and DeskWol, the DeskView software functions as a virtual communication tool that provides time-sensitive statistics and information in real-time. DeskAlert for example can detect hardware failures or changes well before they occur, via alerts and user-defined alarms, by continuously monitoring the devices in the network. By empowering IT managers and administrators to make faster, more informed decisions, the software contributes to the reduction of Total Cost of Ownership (TCO) of up to 30 per cent of day-to-day operating costs.
