Dubai, UAE: Ahmad Bin Shafar, CEO of Emirates Central Cooling Systems Corporation (Empower), the world’s largest district cooling services provider, will participate in the 109th International District Energy Association (IDEA) Annual Conference & Tradeshow. The conference will be held in Vancouver, Canada, from 11 to 14 June 2018.
Prior to the conference launch, Bin Shafar will participate in the IDEA Board meeting scheduled on the 10th June as the first Arab member in the IDEA Board of Directors since 2013. Bin Shafar will review major changes in the district cooling industry, innovative solutions and the future outlook of the industry. He will also share ideas about policies, business models and new trends related to sustainable energy for cities, communities and universities.
Bin Shafar will participate in the “District Cooling for Warmer Climates” workshop to discuss Dubai’s successful case study in implementing district cooling solutions effectively in high population cities with warm climates such as in Asia and Pacific where the need for district cooling rises.
Bin Shafar will also share his vision and thoughts at Global Industry Leaders Plenary Panel on ‘Global Impact’. He will discuss Empower’s latest innovations in the district cooling industry which placed Dubai on the global map of cities that adopt district cooling, according to the best global practices. The Empower delegation will also participate in other seminars, workshops, panel discussions and tours taking place as part of this global event which brings together leaders in the energy industry, in addition to major companies, experts and specialists from around the world. It discusses important topics on energy challenges, and sheds light on the industry's most innovative solutions.
The Board meeting will discuss the details of hosting and organizing the 8th edition of IDEA district cooling conference & exhibition in Dubai in December 2018. Empower had submitted a proposal to host and organise the conference for the third time in Dubai after hosting this international event in the years 2014 and 2016.
“We are happy to participate in this important annual event, as it brings together experts and leaders in the district cooling sector. The conference aims to share experiences and knowledge to support sustainable development in the region and work together to find innovative solutions to enhance the efficiency of energy. It also aims to reduce harmful gas emissions, and support the national and global economy. This will have a positive impact on our natural resources and ensure a safe future for generations to come,” said Bin Shafar.
“Dubai is a pioneer in adopting district cooling systems as an alternative to conventional air conditioners. This is reflected in the emirate’s Demand Side Management Strategy, which aims to increase the use of district cooling systems to 40% by 2030. Dubai seeks to conserve energy and increase efficiency as these are the two main pillars that contribute to enhancing Dubai’s competitiveness and economic sustainability. District cooling systems use 50% less energy than conventional cooling systems. This supports the vision of His Highness Sheikh Mohammed bin Rashid Al Maktoum, and the Dubai Clean Energy Strategy 2050 to transform the emirate into a global center for clean energy and green economy and to make it the city with the lowest carbon footprint in the world,” added Bin Shafar.
In July 2017, Empower signed the Global Cooperation Agreement with United Nations Environment Programme (UNEP) on the United Nations Environment’s Global ‘District Energy in Cities’ initiative, at the 108th IDEA Annual Conference & Tradeshow, in Scottsdale, USA
IDEA is a non-profit trade association that annually hosts the conference and trade show to showcase latest technologies and knowledge in the district energy industry. The attendees include energy professionals, experts, government agencies, system developers, vendors and suppliers.
Empower currently operates over 1.34 Million RT, providing environmentally responsible district cooling services to large-scale real estate developments, such as Jumeirah Group, Jumeirah Beach Residence, Dubai International Financial Centre, Business Bay, Dubai Healthcare City, Jumeirah Lake Towers, Palm Jumeirah, Discovery Gardens, Ibn Battuta Mall, Dubai Design District and International Media Production Zone, among others.
