Effat College was the first private college in Saudi Arabia to be approached by King Abdullah University for Science and Technology's representative for KAUST scholarships, because Effat College is the only college in the Kingdom that offers engineering programs for girls. Being committed to attracting high-calibre students who showed high academic achievement with a minimum overall GPA of 3.0 and a minimum major-field-of-study GPA of 3.3 on a 4.0 scale, demonstrated leadership abilities and Involved in related extracurricular activities, KAUST is recruiting graduate students for its Discovery Scholarship program from all over the world and Saudi students have the lion share in this recruitment.
The recruitment process started when the KAUST's representative approached Dr. Haifa Jamal Al-Lail, the Dean of Effat College, to meet Computer Science, Information Systems and Electrical and Computer Engineering's faculty and students. After reviewing the three majors' curricula by a committee from KAUST, the Computer Science and Electrical and Computer Engineering's students were chosen as potential candidates for the program. The KAUST's representatives asked Effat College to nominate eight students from both majors for three scholarships, whom they interviewed individually. However all the eight students were selected to join the University for the Postgraduate Programs: engineering, science, mathematics, environmental science, computer science, etc. for their high standard qualifications that meet the KAUST high criteria.
Following this brilliant selection, KAUST held a Recognition Event and Award Ceremony to honour the Discovery Scholarship recipients on March 5-6 2008 at Jeddah Hilton Hotel. On the first day, the Recognition Event and Award Ceremony featured an overview of the KAUST presented by Mr. Moutaz Mashour, the KAUST Interim Vice President of Human Resources, open forum with students and families and a speech by Professor Ulrich Walter from Technical University of Munich. On the second day, two workshops were given to winner students.
