DUBAI - May 7, 2012 -- Nineteen students from the Higher Colleges of Technology - Dubai Women's College have trained 66 employees from different organizations.

The topics for the workshops included, maintaining a Healthy Work-Life Balance, Managing your Manager, Cultural Awareness, Discover your Leadership style and Secrets of Self- Empowerment.

The aim of the project is to help HR students understand the principles of training and development as well as apply these principles in a real-life situation. Students designed and developed a training workshop. During the development of this project, students learned the techniques of conducting a training needs analysis, developing training content, developing feedback forms, promoting the training event and most importantly delivering the content using various engagement methods.

The project was implemented in collaboration with several companies including the Emirates Aviation College, Emirates NBD, Friends Provident International, Dubai Customs and Dubai Properties. Dr. Syed Bashir, Lead Academic Faculty - Business Department - said that adults learn more effectively when they are allowed to discuss the subject, relate it to their own experiences, and discover the value of the skills for themselves. "This project was all about learning by doing!" He further emphasized the importance of stronger linkage between academia and the corporate sector.  "Without the help of participating institutions it would be nearly impossible to involve students in delivering a training activity to real employees," added Dr. Bashir.

According to Mohammad, an employee at the Emirates NBD, employees learned the techniques to establish a good relationship with their boss that is not only helpful in employees' professional growth in the organization but also helps in increasing their job satisfaction.

Amna Jaffar, DWC HR student who was involved in this project, commented, 'This project has helped me a lot in understanding the tools that can keep the participants engaged." Another student Amina Rashed said, "Since I am already working in the HR department, this project has helped me in improving my existing skills that will make me more productive at work."

"This project is an excellent example of how DWC students can put their theoretical knowledge into action and benefit the community at the same time," concluded Dr. Monica Gallant, Chair of DWC Business Department.
