High registration response from public and private sector
Abu Dhabi, September 30, 2009: Abu Dhabi Building Codes training series organised by the Department of Municipal Affairs (DMA) commenced this week for the public sector and employees of the municipalities of Abu Dhabi, Al Ain and Western Region. The first workshop titled 2009 International Building Codes Seismic Design Provision was led by Dr. S.K. Gosh, who is internationally known for his work in earthquake engineering. Private sector entities will have access to this and many other internationally recognised workshops starting today. High registration response has been recorded till date from industry professionals across the emirate.
Commenting on the launch of the workshops, H.E. Rashid Mubarak Al Hajeri, Chairman of DMA and Chairman of the Building Codes Higher Council says, "DMA is brining globally recognised talent to the emirate for training both government and industry professionals via workshops to ensure smooth transition and acceptance of the new codes. Launching the new building codes and the training workshops are in line with our aim to enhance the quality of living across the emirate of Abu Dhabi by adopting best practice tools to achieve DMA's vision and the emirate's 2030 vision at large."
The first workshop focused on Seismic Design Provisions and the need to safeguard buildings in the emirate against potential ripple effect from neighbouring earthquake prone regions.
H.E. Ahmed Shareef, Undersecretary of the DMA comments, "I am delighted to see that we are on-track with the launch of the training workshops that will help the public and private sector transition into adherence of the new building codes. We have received positive response and participation from both private and public sector for the workshops. We encourage interested companies to register and take advantage of the world class training series."
The workshops include face-to-face training by leading instructors from the International Code Council, United States. Training will also be available online and via webinars. Sessions are split across the cities of Abu Dhabi and Al Ain.

About Department of Municipal Affairs:
The Department of Municipal Affairs (DMA) commenced operations in May 2007, following the Abu Dhabi Executive Council's decision to integrate the Emirate's municipal system. As a new government entity, the Department of Municipal Affairs was created to lead, coordinate and oversee three municipalities in Abu Dhabi, Al Ain and the Western Region. The DMA has a regulatory role while the service delivery and operations are at the municipality level.
On the 5th of May 2008, the Department of Municipal Affairs along with the Abu Dhabi Municipality, Al Ain Municipality and Western Region Municipality embarked upon a new municipal services journey, with the signing of the historic Municipal Charter which aligns the DMA and three municipalities towards greater collaboration and cooperation.
