DLA Piper has advised Emirates Airline on a significant mainframe and storage outsourcing transaction with IBM worth approximately USD 300 million.

The ten year technology services agreement reached between Emirates and its supplier, IBM, will see IBM providing a fully managed service for Emirates mainframe and storage. Designed to allow the carrier to improve efficiency on its passenger support systems and functions, the new model will allow Emirates to encrypt data in almost real time, and build new apps with functionality that other developers can tap into.

According to Paul Allen, head of Intellectual Property and Technology for DLA Piper in the Middle East, "the transaction is part of a growing trend we are seeing towards a managed service approach, regionally and globally, as organisations seek to streamline operations in order to create efficiencies, improve customer service and reduce costs."

Paul continued: "It was an absolute pleasure to work with the Emirates team on this significant transaction. The deal is testament to Emirates continual commitment to improving the efficiency by which it supports its customers and we were delighted to assist them in achieving their strategic objectives. We look forward to working with Emirates on future transactions".

Rick Ward, Senior Vice President of Group Legal for Emirates, said: "On behalf of the Emirates team, I would like to sincerely thank the DLA Piper team for their fantastic support on this important transaction. In circumstances where we  had a very short  window for completion, DLA Piper's proactive approach, availability and can-do attitude was appreciated. The expert counsel and guidance provided throughout the deal was excellent."

The DLA Piper team was led by Dubai-based IPT partner, Paul Allen and supported by senior legal consultant Robert Flaws. Support was also provided from Kit Burden, Global Co-Chair, Technology Sector (London).
