· Innovative company to create two lagoons spanning a total of 16.6 hectares within the Azha resort in Ain Sokhna
· Patented man-made crystal clear lagoons surrounded by white sandy beaches are a top amenity that's set to add significant value to the development
· Lagoons allow for a wide variety of watersports such as swimming, kayaking and paddle boarding and uses over 30 times less water than a similar sized golf course
Crystal Lagoons, the international water innovation company and developer of the ‘world’s top amenity’ able to bring an idyllic beach lifestyle anywhere in the world, has teamed up with leading Egyptian real estate development company, Madaar Development to create two lagoons at the US$400 million Azha resort being built at Ain Sokhna in Egypt.
Combined, the crystal-clear lagoons, developed at very low construction and maintenance costs, will total over 16 hectares, spanning 6.4 hectares and 10.2 hectares with completion expected at the end of 2018. The crystal-clear lagoons will play a vital role in the appeal of Azha, a high-end waterfront luxury residential development that is being described as ‘the new capital of Egypt’, on the increasingly popular western Red Sea coast.
The 1.6 million-square-metre development will feature a five-star line-up of luxurious amenities including spacious village residences, hotels and serviced apartments, a golf course and clubhouse, shops, community centres, a beach club, sports facilities and parks is expected to be fully operational by 2020. The crystal-clear lagoons, which will be the centre piece of the project, will provide ample space for a range of watersports including swimming, kayaking, paddle boarding and windsurfing.
“We are delighted to be working with Madaar Development to bring the idyllic lifestyle of the beach to Azha,” said Carlos Salas, Regional Director, Middle East, Crystal Lagoons.
The announcement marks Crystal Lagoons’ 11th project in Egypt, which is emerging as a key market for the world-leading leisure amenity.
“We’ve witnessed incredible growth in Egypt in the last two years and the country is now our fifth largest market with several projects in the pipeline to increase our presence further. We are not only adding to the aesthetic appeal of a destination, but providing practical recreational and leisure facilities, such as paddle boarding, sailing and kayaking, at low construction and maintenance costs that adds real value to the resort,” added Salas.
“We are thrilled to be working with Crystal Lagoons on such a tremendous project in Madaar Development's flagship project; Azha Ein Sokhna. In Azha, we aim to create an all year-round haven and a tropical sanctuary for our clients. We will have a long-term cooperation between Madaar and Crystal lagoon in Egypt and internationally. Crystal Lagoons will be part of our vision in transforming Azha into an idyllic beach paradise. We are eager to see both company’s visions come to life," said Gasser Bahgat, CEO at Madaar Developments.
Crystal Lagoons is the only global company with the technological capability to make the development of giant controlled manmade bodies of water economically viable.
The large crystalline lagoons use 30 times less water than a similar sized golf course and half of the water required to irrigate a park of equivalent size. Designed to be self-cleaning, the lagoons use up to 100 times less chemicals than traditional systems and only two percent of the energy required by conventional filtering technologies, making them incredibly sustainable. Furthermore, the company has recently unveiled a new film-based evaporation technology, which lowers water-waste rates by up to 70%.
“We have developed our patented technology and a proven business model to add significant value to a development at a very low cost, and provide substantial ROI for the developer,” said Salas. “Globally we are providing a viable, affordable long-term solution, despite climate and geographical challenges. The proposition is particularly apt considering we can use any kind of water including brackish from underground aquifers, eliminating the need to consume valuable fresh water resources, something particularly pertinent to our partners in the Middle East.”
The company holds two Guinness World Records for the world’s largest lagoon, the first in San Alfonso del Mar, Chile and the second in Sharm El Sheik, Egypt, which is the current world record holder at 12.2 hectares. Crystal Lagoons currently has over 600 projects, in various stages of development and negotiation, in 60 countries worldwide.

ABOUT CRYSTAL LAGOONS
The international market has confirmed the value of this technological innovation, with explosive growth that, in less than seven years, has reached a sizable portfolio of 600 projects worldwide in the urban, tourist, public and industrial sectors, in various stages of development. Today the company is associated with major international real estate companies, with presence in five continents across 60 countries, including the United States, Saudi Arabia, United Arab Emirates, Egypt, Thailand, Indonesia, Singapore, Jordan, Mexico, Brazil, Colombia, Argentina, Peru, Paraguay, Uruguay, Chile, among others.
Patented in 190 countries, this technology is also revolutionising the international energy and water market via its industrial applications for sustainable cooling of thermal power and industrial plants, and low cost water desalination and purification.
Crystal Lagoons is the only company in the world able to offer this innovative technology that enables the economically viable development of giant crystal clear lagoons suitable for swimming and the practice of water sports. These immense bodies of water are an irreplaceable amenity for real estate and tourist projects worldwide, as they add differentiated value and have caused a revolution in the worldwide real estate industry.
These giant crystalline lagoons only require water to compensate for evaporation, and have a water consumption level of approximately half that of a park the same size and up to 30 times lower than a golf course.
Conventional swimming pool technology requires high and permanent levels of residual chlorine or other disinfectants to be maintained in the water to provide permanent disinfection to the pool and avoid contamination of the water brought by external agents such as bathers. Crystal Lagoons’ solution is to apply disinfection pulses within the lagoon that do not require a high and permanent disinfection level, but only use controlled pulses of very small quantities of oxidants/micro-biocides applied according to specific algorithms on very specific patterns. The results of this efficient pulse-based disinfection system are that the overall amounts of additives consumed using Crystal Lagoons’ technology are up to 100 times less than the amount used for swimming pools. A typical lagoon has about 400 sensors/injectors for such purposes.
Also, apart from the difference regarding water treatment and disinfection requirements as discussed previously, it must be noted that conventional swimming pool technology requires the filtration of its entire volume of water between 1 to 6 times per day (generally 4 times per day depending on regulations), which is achieved by using a traditionally configured centralized filtration unit. Crystal Lagoons’ solution is to apply a combination of different ultrasonic waves to the water in the lagoon, which allows the contaminant particles to agglomerate into larger particles that are easily removed from the system, consuming only 2% of the energy compared to conventional swimming pool centralised filtration systems.
