The United Arab Emirates: Allergan, one of the world’s leading pharmaceutical companies recently participated in the 21st edition of Women in Leadership Economic Forum, organized by Naseba.

At the forum, the company’s senior leaders focused on the importance of empowering female employees as well as maintaining a strong gender balance across the workplace. Samia Kanawati, Associate Director; Communication and Government Affairs at Allergan India, Middle East and Africa (IMEA) focused on the importance of combatting gender stereotyping across the work place and the need to drive more employee engagement. She said that in the healthcare industry, the main aim is to work around patients’ needs and to deliver world class experience. To that extent, diversity and inclusion are critical factors in enabling success at the workplace.

“Not only is our commitment to championing diversity and inclusion in the workplace the right thing to do, but it also makes good business sense. We believe diverse teams encourage creativity, drive innovation, and enhance our patient-focused culture. By celebrating each individual’s unique contribution, we are not only investing in the future leadership of Allergan but are able to remain competitive in the global marketplace,” added Kanawati.

Moreover, Rasha Hibri, Chief Finance Officer, IMEA, also attended the Forum. She emphasized on the importance to challenge your own comfort zone to achieve robust results: “in each of us there exists a psychological boundary. As long as we behave within the confines of that boundary, we feel by definition, comfortable. When we venture outside of the boundary, we feel uncomfortable. In the workplace, we must move out of our comfort zones. The only way to grow is to step out of your boundaries in which people feel safe and secure.”

“The healthcare industry as a whole, and specifically the pharmaceutical sector, still has some work to do to ensure gender parity. We are committed to providing women with opportunities to grow within the company, to progress their careers and move more into leadership positions. We do this through challenging individuals’ own comfort zones with the ultimate aim of driving more productivity, fostering creativity and making it easier to be more flexible when unexpected things happen in the future,” added Hibri.

The UAE is known for its commitment to engraving a commitment of gender balance across the region, which is translated through a number of initiatives that aim at empowering women across various sectors and industries. Today, women in the UAE make up 66% of public sector workers, with 30% in leadership roles.[1] Women in the UAE are leaders, ministers, parliamentarians, educators, firefighters, scientists and entrepreneurs. They are empowered, valued, and included, and they will continue to be driving forces alongside their male counterparts to further establish the UAE as a global role model for gender balance.
