The UAE has maintained its position as one of the world leading countries in the global competitiveness indicators related to the ICT sector, according to the Global Knowledge Index 2019 (GKI 2019), issued by the Mohammed bin Rashid Al Maktoum Knowledge Foundation in partnership with the Regional Bureau for Arab States and the United Nations Development Program. The Report, which covered 134 countries in 2019, showed that the UAE remains a leader in a number of global competitiveness indicators, in addition to making significant progress in other indicators.
According to the Report, the UAE has maintained first position in population covered by mobile-cellular networks, Internet and telephony level of competition, and active mobile-broadband subscriptions. Moreover, the UAE has achieved major advance in investment in telecom services, from 86th rank globally in 2018 to 4th globally in 2019. In terms of Subscriptions, the UAE has achieved the second rank globally this year compared to the 7th rank in 2018.
Additionally, the UAE achieved major advance in Fixed-broadband subscriptions, International Internet bandwidth per Internet user, ICT Inputs, and Internet users.
On these accomplishments, H.E. Hamad Obaid Al Mansoori, TRA Director General, said: “We are proud to conclude 2019 with a number of global achievements in the ICT sector, where we have maintained the first position in a number of indicators, and we have made major improvement in the remaining indicators. These results are the outcome of the great efforts made by TRA team at The Telecommunications Sector, in cooperation with TRA's strategic partners, in line with the directives of the wise leadership and keen to achieve the UAE's vision and future goals.”
Al Mansoori indicated that 2020 will be a new phase of work and planning for TRA. He said: “Today we are on the threshold of a new phase of Artificial Intelligence, digital transformation and smart services. This stage requires us to develop new plans and strategy through which we foresee the future, understand its requirements and work to achieve it based on the national human cadres, who accomplished this achievement, and whom will be the main factor in achieving more successes to achieve the first position globally in various fields.''
The Global Knowledge Index (GKI) 2019 helps leaders prepare their citizens for the future knowledge setting and equips them with sufficient skills. The GKI measures knowledge as a comprehensive concept relevant to various dimensions of contemporary human life, based on a UN vision and reports that correlate knowledge and development, transforming the equation from the perspective of material and natural resources development to intelligent knowledge-based development, for a comprehensive and sustainable development.
