Jazan, Saudi Arabia: The Shuqaiq 3 desalination plant, located in the province of Jazan, in southwestern Saudi Arabia, was inaugurated in a ceremony organized under the patronage of HRH Prince Mohammad Bin Nasser and HE Eng. Abdulrahman Al-Fadhli, Minister of Environment, Water and Agriculture.
Recognized as one of Saudi Arabia’s largest desalination plants, Shuqaiq 3 has a total production capacity of 450,000 cubic meters per day, capable of meeting the water demand of over 1.8 million Saudis across the Asir and Jizan provinces. In addition, this is the region’s first large-scale plant that uses energy-efficient pure reverse osmosis technology, capable of supplying up to 150 Hm3 (gigaliters) of high-quality water annually.
The inauguration ceremony, held in the Chamber of Commerce Hall in Jazan City, was presided over by HE Eng. Abdulrahman Al-Fadhli, Minister of Environment, Water and Agriculture together with numerous authorities such as HRH Prince Mohammed bin Abdulaziz bin Mohammed bin Abdulaziz, Deputy Governor of the Jazan Region, HE Eng. Abdullah Al-Abdulkarim, Governor of the Saline Water Conversion Corporation and HE Eng. Khaled Alqureshi, CEO of Saudi Water Partnership Company (SWPC). HE Álvaro Iranzo, Spanish Ambassador to Saudi Arabia, also attended together with members of the Consortium, including Vice Chairman and CEO of Abdul Latif Jameel Enterprises, Faisal S. Alsamannoudi, and representatives of Almar Water Solutions.
The plant was constructed by a consortium formed by Almar Water Solutions, through Abdul Latif Jameel Enterprises, ACCIONA, Marubeni Corporation and Rawafid Alhadarah Holding Co.
Recognized across the water sector as one of the most complex, innovative and sustainable plants in its class, in September 2019, Shuqaiq 3 was awarded the "Utilities Project of the Year" at the Middle East Energy Awards 2019 held in Dubai, UAE, consolidating its position as one of the region’s flagship projects.
In addition, the plant will contribute to the Kingdom’s drive for greater sustainability and water security in line with Vision 2030, in addition to its broader ambition to further align with the global green agenda.
