MUMBAI - India announced import quotas on Tuesday of 400,000 tonnes of pigeon peas and 150,000 tonnes of black matpe.
The government sets quotas each year for the two pulses, which have surged in price in India in recent weeks after excessive rainfall hit summer-sown crops.
Traders must import pigeon peas, also known in India as tur, by Nov. 15, the government said in a circular.
Imports of black matpe, also known as urad, need to be completed before March 31, 2021, the circular said.
India is the world's biggest consumer and importer of pulses. It mainly imports pigeon peas and black matpe from Myanmar, Mozambique and Tanzania.
