JEDDAH: A fire hit at least three buildings in Jeddah's historic center on Tuesday, forcing occupants to evacuate, officials said.
Engineer Sami Nawar, mayor of the district called Al-Balad, said the affected buildings were the Al-Qumsani, Al-Ashmawi and Abdel-Aal.The name of the fourth one was not immediately available.
Nawar said Civil Defense firefighters contained 80 percent of the fire at around 10 p.m. but there were fears that the Al-Qumsani building might collapse.
More than a dozen firefighting and rescue teams from Jeddah's Civil Defense Directorate helped in putting battling the blaze.
Col. Saeed Sarhan, Civil Defense spokesman in Makkah region, said the the process of controlling the fire was still underway.
He said rescue teams were evacuating the area around the fire to ensure the safety of residents.
Al-Balad is the historic center of Jeddah, the primary gateway to the holy cities of Makkah and Madinah.
