MANAMA: The Interior Ministry will take legal measures against people misusing social media websites. It announced the clampdown amidst an increasing number of cyber accounts which aim to fuel sedition, subvert civil peace, erode social fabric and destablise the country.

Its weekly legal culture column said the directorate of anti-corruption, economic and electronic security will hold violators accountable. The ministry also warned people against posting subversive contents or controversial comments.

Citizens and residents using social media sites are urged to be cautious, seek credible information from official sources and avoid reposting rumours and allegations, it said. “Most accounts defaming Bahrain are run from abroad, including by convicted fugitives.”
