His Majesty the King’s representative for humanitarian work and youth affairs and Supreme Council for Youth and Sports chairman Shaikh Nasser bin Hamad Al Khalifa issued an edict yesterday regulating the organisation of sports events in Bahrain.

All sports events are prohibited unless authorised by the Youth and Sports Affairs Ministry.

The edict allows the ministry’s directorate of legal affairs and licences to approve sports events, which are held by institutions, companies, clubs, associations, Bahrain Olympic Committee, Bahrain Paralympics Committee or any other youth and sports entities.

The directorate has to immediately contact the security and health authorities and co-ordinate with the National Medical Taskforce for Combating Covid-19 upon receiving an application to hold sports events before informing the applicant about the decision.

The GDN reported on Sunday that a popular annual race held last Friday had sparked outrage for allegedly violating social distancing protocol, with organisers of the Seef Mall Half Marathon Race receiving a backlash from community leaders and members of the public.

More than 400 people had signed up for the race, organised by the Bahrain Road Runners.
