Let's promise our children 'an accident-free day' when they return to schools after the summer break on September 2.
Dubai Police on Tuesday launched a unique road safety campaign titled 'No-Incidents Day' on its website where residents can pledge a document to ensure no fatalities on the first day of the next academic year.
Major General Pilot Ahmed Mohammed bin Thani, Assistant Commander-in-Chief of Dubai Police, launched the e-campaign organised by the department of security awareness at the general department of community happiness, in cooperation with the general department of traffic at the Dubai Police, to start the new academic year as a day without traffic accidents.
The 'pledge document' prepared for the residents contains a series of commitments for participants to comply with traffic laws such as fastening of seatbelts, maintaining speed limits and safe distance; non use of mobile phone while driving. Residents can join the campaign until September 2 by registering their names at https://www.dubaipolice.gov.ae/wps/portal/home/miscellaneouslinks/day_without_accident.
The police will reward participants of the campaign with certificates of thanks and appreciation as well as valuable prizes.
Atzu Heifeng, Consul General of China, Mohammed Arshad, Consul General of Pakistan, Sumathi Vasudev, Labour Attache at the Consulate General of India, Brigadier General Abdullah Ali Al Ghaithi, director general of department of operations affairs; Brigadier Saif Muhair Al Mazroui, director-general of department of traffic; and Faisal Al Qasim, director of security media department at the Dubai Police were present during the campaign launch.
Campaign will continue
Major General Bin Thani said that the campaign will be organised in the beginning of every new school year in the coming years. He added that the campaign be evaluated and it will eventually help drivers to commit to traffic laws permanently for their safety and other road users.
Meanwhile, Brig. Gen. Al Ghaithi said that 58 traffic accidents resulting in three deaths, 23 serious and 35 moderate injuries were recorded during the first week of the previous academic year.
The number of accidents were 68 and 66 during the first week of school reopening in 2016 and 2015 respectively.
Al Ghaithi urged drivers to adhere to speed and lane disciplines, not to use mobile phones or be preoccupied with other things, and avoid driving if exhausted.
Brigadier Saif Al Mazroui urged drivers not to ignore stop signs of school buses in order to avoid accidents. He pointed out that violators will be fined Dh1,000 and 10 black points as per the UAE traffic law.
