RIYADH — The supervisory teams at the Ministry of Islamic Affairs, Call and Guidance have arrested the imam of a mosque located in the east of Riyadh for collecting donations in cash and kind.

It was found that the imam took advantage of the mosque’s facilities and constructed a temporary shelter made of iron to stock the collected foodstuffs in violation of the regulations.

The imam was accused of violating the circulars issued by the ministry with regard to prohibiting the collection of donations in cash and kind except through the permitted official channels.

The ministry said in a statement that the supervisory teams followed up on the incident and documented it. The case was referred to the competent authorities at the ministry to complete the legal procedures against the violator.

Meanwhile, the ministry called on citizens and expatriates to cooperate with it in reporting, if they found any mosque employees engage in collecting donations, by contacting the ministry’s Beneficiary Services Center (1933) or informing the ministry’s branches in various regions across the Kingdom. The ministry stressed the importance of the role of citizens and residents in getting accomplished the ministry’s message and its general goals.
